Brits should swap out this one item for a cleaner home

A survey of 2,000 adults revealed one in three Brits haven't swapped their mop head in half a year, essentially just spreading germs around their floors.

Over half of those polled (53%) confess they seldom clean behind appliances, allowing dirt to accumulate and only mopping when necessary.

Geli Lee, home cleaning expert and engineer at Dyson, which conducted the study to promote its wet floor cleaner, the WashG1, stated: "Cleaning your hard floors properly and regularly is important for maintaining a healthy environment around your home."

"Without a proper cleaning routine, dirt may unknowingly build up and spread around your home. It is evident from our research that current mopping habits mean British households aren't cleaning their floors as effectively as they should."

The research also discovered that while 45% will change the dirty water when moving between rooms, a significant 41% won't change the water in the bucket until it 'looks dirty'.

It was revealed that 28% confessed to mopping their floors once every two weeks or less. Only 41% have a regular cleaning schedule, and 60% are only motivated to clean when there is visible dirt or dust.

However, 22% still worry their floors are dirty even after they've mopped them, with one in four being 'extremely worried' about dust.

Geli Lee, a home cleaning expert and engineer at Dyson, warned: "From ignoring problem areas where dust and debris build up, cross contamination with dirty water to not replacing mop heads or inconsistent cleaning, current mopping behaviours may be making floors dirtier as opposed to cleaner."

"Moving away from traditional methods, wet floor cleaners simplify the floor cleaning experience and provide a modern efficient and hygienic solution."

Here are some top tips from home cleaning expert Geli Lee on how to eliminate dirt around your home:

  • Establish a cleaning schedule to keep on top of dirt accumulation.
  • Ensure a clutter-free surface, clear any mess from the floor or other surfaces.
  • Pick the right machine as different vacuums are designed for various floor types and home sizes.
  • Clean your floors 'little and often'.
  • Regularly washing your floors in high-traffic areas will help prevent dirt build-up and stop it from being trodden into your floor.
