I tried butter from Aldi, Lidl and Morrisons and found one as 'moreish' as Lurpak

Spreadable butter is a thing of beauty. It's far tastier than margarine and generally more affordable and convenient for sandwiches than blocks of real butter.

But when reporter and mum Zoe Chamberlain spotted that was offering blocks of butter in its Savers range as a competitor to Lurpak, she decided it was too good a deal not to try. Avaialble for a fraction of a cost of the premium brand, Zoe discovered that and also offer similarly priced blocks of butter.

Eager to see how they measured up, she said: "I decided to grab a block from each supermarket to see how they stacked up against the original Lurpak. I sampled each on a slice of warm toast to compare taste, texture and ease of spreading and here's what I discovered."

Here's what Zoe thought of the rival butters:

Lurpak Butter

Lurpak Slightly Salted Butter is priced at £2.15 for 200g from Morrisons, which equates to £1.08 per 100g. Lurpak has been in the butter-making business since 1901 and their butter is touted as being perfect for everything from spreading and baking to drizzling and frying, reports .

It's suitable for vegetarians and contains 52g of saturated fat and 1.2g of salt per 100g. This was creamy, salty and addictive, I could easily enjoy it by itself on crusty bread.

Zoe's favourite, she described it as "delicious" adding "I awarded it a full five out of five stars."

Morrisons Savers Butter

Savers Salted Butter is priced at £1.69 for 250g from Morrisons, or £1.79 online, which works out to 72p per 100g. It contains 52.1g of saturated fat and 1.5g of salt per 100g.

This vegetarian-friendly option is made with Red Tractor certified milk. It spread well onto the toast but was rather bland, lacking the creamy, salty flavour you'd expect from Lurpak.

Not overly impressed, despite the bargain price tag. Zoe called this butter "a bit of a letdown" rating it two out of five stars.

Aldi's Cowbelle British Butter

Priced at £1.79 for 250g from Aldi, which equates to 72p per 100g, Cowbelle British Butter contains 54g of saturated fat and 1.5g of salt per 100g.

Certified by Red Tractor and made with British milk, this butter is suitable for vegetarians. However, it was slightly difficult to spread straight from the fridge and I found it lacked flavour.

Unimpressed Zoe said "it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't anything special either. I gave it a score of two out of five stars."

Lidl's West Country Butter

West Country Butter from Lidl costs £1.79 for 250g, working out to 72p per 100g - roughly on par with Morrisons and Aldi. But that's where the similarities ended.

Zoe said: "This one really took me by surprise. It boasted a wonderful creamy texture. Although only unsalted was available when I visited the store, it turned out to be just as moreish as the Lurpak. It also spread really easily straight from the fridge.

"I awarded it a full five out of five stars."

Final Verdict

Following on from her investigations, Zoe said: "It's clear this was a two-horse race and I have to say Lidl emerged victorious due to the price and the fantastic flavour. It was 36p cheaper per 100g than the Lurpak but tasted just as good.

"It's an excellent way to cut costs on my grocery shopping, so I'll definitely be purchasing it again."
