Inside world's poshest McDonald's in quaint location with lobster on the menu

There’s a McDonald’s restaurant that may just be the poshest in the world - and it’s completely different to any standard venue.

McDonald’s is an iconic fast food brand with a very distinctive look - its golden arches are famous across the globe - but one of the legendary company’s sites offers patrons a unique experience, thanks to its swanky décor and quaint location.

Based in the idyllic waterfront town of Freeport, Maine, in the United States, the restaurant is housed inside a Victorian-style mansion built in 1850. The building ensures McDonald’s blends seamlessly with the rest of the beautiful, quaint dwellings in the picturesque town.

The mansion - Gore House - has been painted grey with white trimming and details, and there’s perfectly landscaped gardens surrounding it. Park benches provide proof the gorgeous building is actually a McDonald’s, with subtle ‘M’ logos in the centre of the backrests.

Inside, the attention to detail continues, with mahogany booths, carved wooden chairs and even fireplaces. There are, of course, many details customers would expect from a regular McDonald’s, like light-up menus behind the counter and touchscreen self-service kiosks.

The building became home to the company back in 1984, and has since become something of a tourist attraction with people keen to try out a more luxurious fast food experience. It even serves lobster rolls for an extra twist on the regular restaurant menu.

A TikTok user called Frank Owen recently captured a video inside the fast food outlet – and people were very impressed.

One gushed: "I live in Maine! I've been here a lot. It's beautiful inside." And Frank agreed: "It's such a cool location. And the town is beautiful!"

And a third swooned: "Omg I'm going here." To which Frank replied: "You should!"

Despite there being more than 40,000 McDonald’s restaurants all over the world, the swanky Freeport venue is lauded by the company itself. It came in first place in a list of the ‘ 13 most iconic McDonald’s across America ’ compiled on the company’s website.

Describing the ‘McMansion’, the fast food juggernaut penned: “Built in 1850, the spectacular Gore House was converted into Freeport, Maine’s only McDonald’s in 1984. Love seafood? Add a lobster roll to your order here. Yes, really!”

There are all the usual McDonald’s favourites included on the menu but it’s known for featuring special, fancier additions on occasion. In the summer, its lobster rolls pull in the customers, with tourists and locals alike keen to snap up some seafood and see if it can measure up - or even compete - with the locally sourced seafood on offer from nearby restaurateurs.

The Freeport McDonald’s isn’t opposed to modern adaptations - it had a drive-thru installed in 2000 to bring convenience and speed to tourists and town residents - but its welcome and popularity in the town wasn’t always so.

When the decision was confirmed to turn Gore House into a McDonald’s back in the 80s, it made the national news in America. The New York Times reported on the development, with some Freeport locals very concerned the restaurant would be a blot on the picture-perfect landscape.

At the time, a rep for the famed fast food chain told the paper: “What we are doing there is something we probably have never done before in terms of design and the amount of time and effort involved. We are willing to spend the money to make it compatible with the area, the history, the community and the people who live there.”
