Thomas Tuchel is set to become the third non-Brit to take charge of the England national team, and icon has already given his opinion on the Champions League-winning manager.
The German tactician, who has a rich managerial CV with clubs like Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, , and a brief spell at Bayern Munich, is poised to begin an 18-month tenure with the England squad starting January, planning to steer them through to the 2026 World Cup across the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Carragher, a keen commentator on footballing affairs, had voiced his preference for Tuchel to succeed at Liverpool following Klopp's departure from Anfield last season.
As Arne Slot stepped into the role, Carragher pointed out in his Telegraph column: "I would have given more thorough consideration to a coach like Thomas Tuchel, who took on and beat Pep Guardiola in the ultimate test - a Champions League final," referencing Tuchel's victory with Chelsea in the 2021 final.
He added that Tuchel had shown his mettle by following Klopp's footsteps successfully at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, and despite a less impressive time at Bayern Munich this season, he cited the resiliency of coaches like Carlo Ancelotti and Unai Emery as evidence of how top managers rebound.
But Carragher also remarked, "If another English club takes Tuchel, that would convince me they will significantly improve, but my sense is Liverpool don't want a coach with a reputation for being fractious."
"I would prefer a proven winner who could be difficult to manage to a coach who might be easy to manage but still have everything to prove. My overriding concern is this: does Slot move to England ready to take on Guardiola for the Premier League and Champions League?"
Despite these concerns, Slot has made an impressive start at Liverpool, sitting atop the Premier League table during the international break after securing nine victories in his first 10 matches across all competitions. However, Carragher's respect for Tuchel is evident, and he will undoubtedly be closely watching his performance with England.
