'Laughably bad' blockbuster on Netflix has the last laugh - becoming one of the streamer's most-watched this year

Netflix has yet another surprise hit on its hands - despite many deeming it an absolute travesty of a film.

Originally released in January, Lift purports to blend high-octane action sequences with leading man Kevin Hart’s signature comedic flair, but spectacularly fails to embody the thrilling and hilarious adventure it aspires to be.

In fact, the only hilarious thing about this movie is its critics score on Rotten Tomatoes - a meagre 29%. But despite its critical mauling, the film has still managed to amass a whopping 129.4m views between January and June, with 238.8m hours watched.

It has also held off tough competition from the likes of Under Paris, Society of the Snow, the Super Mario Brothers Movie and Mother of the Bride on the platform. In fact, only Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel has been watched more, coming in at the top of the list with a gargantuan 143.8m views, and 263.7m hours watched.

Lift is an action-comedy heist film starring Kevin Hart as a skilled and quick-witted thief recruited by the FBI for a high-stakes mission. After a series of unfortunate run-ins with the law, our hero finds himself with few options but to co-operate with the authorities. His task? To pull off one of the most ambitious heists ever attempted: stealing a load of gold from a highly secured international flight mid-air.

Teaming up with a group of misfit criminals and experts in various fields, Kevin must navigate a dangerous and thrilling plan, all while dealing with the absurdity and chaos that ensues with his crew.

As tensions rise and the plan becomes increasingly complex, the leading man's natural charm, quick-thinking, and knack for getting out of sticky situations are put to the ultimate test. But with the clock ticking and stakes higher than ever, Kevin realises that the mission may involve more than just stealing - his survival is also on the line.

Viewers certainly don't mince their words when it comes to giving Lift a kicking, with one Rotten Tomatoes user branding the movie ‘laughably bad’.

Charlie posted: ‘It was a laughably bad movie. Bad storyline, cringe and predictable,’ while Hussain wrote: ‘One of the worst films I’ve ever seen'.

Anton waded in with: ‘Even for a fan of Kevin Hart movies, this is unwatchable.’

Arrows_O added: ‘This was without a doubt one of the worst action movies I have seen. Nonsensical and silly, and yet without anything truly unique to it. Truly awful.'

Omar A raged: ‘I love KH, but this movie was very disappointing. It’s probably the worse film he’s ever done. The story, the acting, the character, and the lines are poor. We couldn’t finish half of the movie. Don’t waste your time.’
