Chennai and its neighbouring areas, including Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet, are expected to experience heavy rainfall, with estimates ranging from 6 cm to 12 cm in isolated spots until November 15. The showers are driven by a low-pressure system forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which is projected to move toward Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka in the coming days.

IMD issues yellow alerts across Tamil Nadu
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for rainfall in various districts. On November 12, 12 districts were on alert, followed by 17 districts on November 13, expanding to 27 districts on November 14, and then covering 25 districts on November 15.

According to an IMD bulletin, “For the next 48 hours, the city and the suburbs may receive moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some areas. Skies may be partly cloudy. Maximum temperature is likely to be around 32°C-33°C and minimum temperature is likely to be around 25°C.”

Rainfall expected to spread across coastal and interior regions
IMD officials anticipate that the rain activity will begin along the coastal districts, from Tiruvallur to Ramanathapuram, starting November 12. The rainfall is expected to extend to nearby areas on November 13, moving further to south interior districts and a few western regions by November 14. By November 15, heavy rain will primarily affect coastal, northern, and southern districts, while on November 16 and 17, the showers are expected to shift to western and some northern interior districts.

Rainfall deficits and an active monsoon phase

From November 12, an active monsoon phase is expected to bring much-needed rain to many districts, as blogger Pradeep John noted in a recent post. “From Nov 12, the active phase of the monsoon picks up. The action will first start in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet followed by other parts of Tamil Nadu. A good rainy week ahead from the 12th,” he shared.

Several districts, including those surrounding Chennai, have been experiencing rainfall deficits this season. Since October 1, Kancheepuram has recorded only 19 cm of rain, marking a 36% shortfall; Tiruvallur recorded 31 cm with a 6% deficit, while Chengalpet saw 25 cm, indicating a 31% shortfall.

Chennai and Tamil Nadu Rainfall statistics for the season
As per a TOI report, Chennai has seen 43 cm of rainfall since October 1, registering a slight surplus of about 1%. Tamil Nadu, as a whole, has recorded 26 cm of rain since the start of October, also showing a 1% excess compared to the expected seasonal average.
