Sirens sounded in Haifa and surrounding areas in northern Israel as Hezbollah launched multiple projectiles into Israeli airspace. This followed the Israeli Defense Forces' ( IDF) bombing of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. The bombing marked one of Hezbollah’s deadliest days in decades.
Israel's Iron Dome defense system successfully intercepted most of the projectiles, according to an Israeli army statement. Approximately 180 projectiles and one unmanned aerial vehicle entered Israeli airspace over the course of the day.
The Israeli military urged civilians to prepare for incoming missiles and drones, leading to alerts throughout Haifa and Carmel in the north. Hezbollah’s attacks were in response to the IDF’s 300 airstrikes on Hezbollah sites, resulting in about 500 deaths and several hundred injuries. The Lebanese health ministry reported 492 fatalities, including 35 children and 58 women, with over 1,645 individuals wounded.
A high-ranking Hezbollah military commander and more than a dozen other important military officials were among those killed.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed the people of Lebanon, asserting that Hezbollah had put them in danger. “Hezbollah has been using you as human shields. It placed rockets in your living rooms and missiles in your garage,” he said. “Don’t let Hezbollah endanger your lives and the lives of your loved ones."
The Iron Dome system, developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with US support, became operational in 2011. It intercepts rockets, mortars, and drones, focusing on threats aimed at populated areas or vital infrastructure.
