IPL Auctions: Rs 641.5 crore on the line! Who has 'pretty good' bidding power for Pant, Iyer, Buttler and Starc

The Indian Premiere League (IPL) franchises' shopping checklist, ahead of the ultimate auction, is all set after the teams finally spilled their lists of retained players.

The battlefield is now open for top players including Mitchell Starc, Jos Buttler and IPL 2024 winning skipper Shreyas Iyer and the teams are eyeing to go all out for their desired players with a cumulative amount of Rs 641.5 crore un the mega auction.

Punjab Kings, owned by actress Preity Zinta, will have lots of picks in the forthcoming auction as the team retained only two uncapped players, leaving themselves a whopping amount of Rs 110.5 crore. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals have the smallest purse at Rs 41 crore, having retained six players.

For the IPL 2025 mega auction, each franchise have been given an auction budget of Rs 120 crore to build their squads. Teams have been allowed to retain up to six players in total, with a maximum of five capped players (Indian or overseas) and up to two uncapped players.

Retentions were done through direct retention or Right to Match (RTM) cards. The retention costs for capped players have been set as follows: the 1st retention will cost Rs 18 crore, the 2nd retention Rs 14 crore, the 3rd retention Rs 11 crore, the 4th retention Rs 18 crore, and the 5th retention Rs 14 crore.
Franchise Retentions and Remaining Budgets
As the IPL 2025 mega auction looms, franchises have been strategic in retaining key players while managing their auction budgets.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have chosen to retain marquee players like Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell, leaving them with a budget of Rs 51 crore for further team building. This reflects their focus on maintaining a balanced core team mixed with experienced and emerging talents.

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) have retained key figures including Heinrich Klaasen and Pat Cummins, allocating significant funds to ensure their batting and bowling line-ups remain formidable. With Rs 45 crore left in their budget, SRH aims to strengthen their squad further, eyeing impactful additions in the auction.

Rajasthan Royals (RR), with Rs 41 crore available, have focused on consistency by holding onto captain Sanju Samson and promising players like Yashasvi Jaiswal. Their approach underscores their commitment to nurturing a winning core, capable of building on previous performances.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) opted for a more streamlined retention strategy with only Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal secured, leaving them Rs 83 crore to bid aggressively for key players in the auction. This could signal a major reshuffle or targeted purchases to bolster their squad depth.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), led by the iconic MS Dhoni, have retained pivotal players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja, showcasing a mix of youthful potential and experienced leadership. With Rs 55 crore left, CSK will look to refine their winning formula.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) retained impactful players including Nicholas Pooran and Ravi Bishnoi, balancing their team dynamics with Rs 69 crore available to make strategic purchases.

Gujarat Titans (GT), led by star players Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill, have similarly retained key performers, maintaining Rs 69 crore for the auction.

Delhi Capitals (DC), holding Rs 73 crore, have kept important assets such as Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, showcasing their intent to maintain a competitive edge.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) retained minimal players, like Shashank Singh, resulting in a substantial budget of Rs 110.5 crore, signaling a potential overhaul.

Mumbai Indians (MI), with stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah retained, have Rs 45 crore to add reinforcements and balance experience with fresh talent, hoping to reclaim their dominant position in the tournament.
