The Indian Railways will run longer Vande Bharat trains of up to 20 coaches (on select existing routes with higher demand. Officials aware of the development said a tentative replacement plan of Vande Bharat trains is planned on the basis of occupancy.
“Three Vande Bharat trains of 16 coaches will be turned into 20 car trains. Another four trains with 8 coaches will be turned to those with 16 cars,” the official told ET.
Indian Railways currently runs 144 Vande Bharat train services. The overall occupancy of Vande Bharat Express trains in fiscal 2024-25 and 2025-26 (till June 2025) stood at 102.01% and 105.03% respectively.
There are currently 10 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains under production. Further production of 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper rakes has been taken up by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. Besides these, contracts for manufacturing of 200 Vande Bharat Sleeper rakes have also been awarded to Technology Partners.
