New Delhi: India has not lifted its ban on TikTok, government officials said Friday, after some reports claimed that the Chinese-owned short-video platform that New Delhi banned in 2020 has become accessible in the country.
TikTok's content is still not available in India, the officials said.
While the landing page on the TikTok website earlier used to display a message that the service was not available in India, now it is showing their "About us" page when accessed on desktop, the officials said.
This does not mean its content is available here, they clarified.
ByteDance-owned TikTok was among many Chinese apps that India banned in June 2020 citing security concerns. At the time, India was one of TikTok's largest markets with millions of users. Many similar Indian platforms had emerged after its ban.
The latest news on TikTok emerges amid a warming in India-China relations and a relative chill in New Delhi's ties with Washington due to massive tariffs placed by the Trump administration on India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting China later this month to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
