In a significant step towards enhancing women's safety and improving public transport infrastructure, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has decided to install panic buttons in its buses. State Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik said the initiative is part of a broader safety and modernization plan.
All new MSRTC buses and bus stands will also be equipped with CCTV cameras to ensure 24/7 surveillance, while the number of security personnel will be increased to boost passenger safety. “Women’s safety is a top priority. These measures will help create a safer and more secure travel environment for all passengers,” Sarnaik stated.
In addition to safety features, the government is set to modernize bus stations across the state using the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models. Developers will construct essential infrastructure including bus stations, depots, and administrative offices on MSRTC-owned land.
The MSRTC currently owns around 1,360 hectares of land at 842 locations, categorized into urban, semi-urban, and rural zones. In the first phase of the project, tenders will be floated for the development of 66 such locations. The selected developers will be responsible for upgrading land at district, taluka, and rural levels, aiming for efficient land utilization and enhanced passenger amenities.
"Reinforcing its commitment to providing quality services, MSRTC will modernize all bus station toilets to ensure cleanliness and hygiene. The goal is to offer passengers a comfortable and safe travel experience" said Sairnaik.
Further strengthening the fleet, the corporation will induct 25,000 new buses in a phased manner. "This year, 2,640 new ‘Lalpari’ buses are being added, with over 800 already deployed at 113 depots statewide. Additionally, tenders are being processed for 3,000 more buses, which include ‘Midi’ buses tailored for rural routes and 200 air-conditioned sleeper buses designed for long-distance travel" further added Sairnaik.
Serving over 55 lakh people daily, MSRTC is considered the lifeline of Maharashtra. The comprehensive overhaul—spanning safety, infrastructure, and fleet expansion—aims to make the corporation financially stronger and provide efficient, affordable, and accessible transport services to every corner of the state.
