PTSD treatment: PTSD is a disease that settles inside humans as a fear, and its effect on humans is very deep. Let us tell you what was found in the research on this.

PTSD treatment breakthrough: Post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD is a serious mental problem that can occur after a scary or life-threatening accident. This disease has a profound effect on a person's thinking, behavior and emotions. People repeatedly see nightmares, feel nervous and have difficulty living a normal life. Usually medicines and therapy are used to treat it, but they do not work on every patient.

Surprising results found in the study

A recent clinical study conducted in America has raised hopes. All the nine patients involved in this research were completely cured of PTSD after a new treatment. Scientists from Texas University at Dallas and Baylor University Medical Center conducted this study. The special thing was that even after six months of monitoring, the symptoms did not return in any patient.

What is VNS technology?

In this new treatment, a technique called Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) was used along with traditional therapy. In this technique, mild electrical signals are sent to the nerve of the neck. This nerve controls many functions of the brain such as mood, stress and emotions. Scientists believe that VNS combined with therapy brings rapid positive changes in the brain.

How was the therapy given?

Researchers combined VNS with Prolonged Exposure Therapy. In this therapy, the patient is gradually exposed to his fear in a safe environment. For this, a small device was implanted under the skin of the neck, which gives small electrical signals during the session. The treatment was done in a total of 12 sessions and the results were surprising.

Research work going on for 13 years

Scientists have been working on VNS for the last 13 years. Earlier, they have been successful in improving the movement of hands and legs of stroke patients. They say that when VNS is combined with therapy, the brain learns new things faster. This is called neuroplasticity.

How big is the risk of PTSD?

Every year, about 5 percent of adults in America are affected by PTSD. The number of women among them is twice that of men. Many patients are unable to recover from medicines or therapy or have to suffer side effects. This new method can be a ray of hope for such patients.

Safe and small device

The VNS device used in this trial is very small, about the size of a coin. It does not interfere with tests such as MRI or CT scans. It has been safely used on about 50 people in Dallas over the past several years.

Now the power of technology will be proved by a big trial

Now its Phase-2 trial is going on in Dallas and Austin. More patients will be included in this and there will also be a "placebo group", so that it can be clear that the results have come only due to the device. Overall, this study is small but very promising. If similar results are obtained in future larger trials, then this technique can become a life-changing treatment for PTSD patients.
