It's a far cry from his former life, which includes two very public and ugly divorces and a lot of public attention. Speaking to PEOPLE Magazine, he said: "Most of my 50s were spent apologising to the people I hurt... I own everything I did."

He explained he new memoir is simply him telling the stories the way they actually happened. That included several trips to rehab, and he claims it was a miracle had only had one overdose and close brush with death in his heaviest partying days.

Speaking of getting clean, he revealed you "have to be willing". He said his main reason for changing his ways were to be a better and more reliable dad to his kids, Cassandra, 41, Sami, 21, Lola, 20 and Max and Bob, 16.

“I keep a [mental list] of the worst, most shameful things I’ve done, and I can look at that in my head if I feel like having a drink,” he said before admitting he has no interest in returning to his drug-taking self.

However, he also candidly claimed: "Whether it’s true or not, I like to think the next hit would kill me."

He said that during the height of his fame, where he was earning $1.8m (£1.3m) per episode of his hit sitcom, he became erratic.

And he previously boasted of “banging seven gram rocks” of cocaine and claiming to have “tiger blood” running through his veins.

Charlie said that he is still evolving as he tries to forgive his former ways and actions. He said there are sometimes moments that give him the "shame shivers". But he said thankfully those times are getting further apart, labelling it "progress".

After taking a hiatus from acting, Charlie has confirmed he would be keen to return to the screen if the time is right. However, he said it's currently about taking things a day at a time.

"I’m not calling all of this a comeback," he went on describing his latest projects. "I’m calling it a reset. I’m just living for the next moment, whatever that turns out to be.”
