Hong Kong Bans Popular Apps from Govt-Computers Over Security Concerns

Send Push

The Hong Kong government has announced a ban on popular applications such as WhatsApp, WeChat, and Google Drive from work computers used by most civil servants. This decision stems from potential security risks associated with these platforms.

Under the new IT security guidelines issued by the Digital Policy Office, many civil servants have expressed frustration over the added inconvenience. While they cannot use these applications on work devices, employees can still access them via personal devices during work hours. Additionally, exceptions to the ban can be granted with managerial approval.

Experts in information technology noted that various organizations have implemented similar policies in response to the rising risks of data leaks and cybersecurity threats. Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, highlighted the need for the ban during a radio interview, citing the increasing seriousness of hacking incidents. He mentioned that both the United States and China have enacted strict measures regarding their internal computer systems.

One civil servant, who preferred to remain anonymous, revealed that her office frequently relies on cloud storage services to share large files with external vendors.

Francis Fong, honorary president of the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, stated that officials explained the policy's aim is to prevent malware from bypassing the government's firewall through encrypted communications. This measure also addresses potential data breach issues.

Anthony Lai, director of VX Research Limited, a cybersecurity firm with operations in Hong Kong and Britain, supported the government's approach, noting the low cybersecurity awareness among some staff and the absence of robust internal monitoring systems.

Earlier this year, several data breaches within various Hong Kong government departments compromised the personal information of tens of thousands of individuals, raising significant concerns about data security.
