The United States has urged India to cooperate with Canada’s investigation into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader. The US labeled Canada’s allegations as “extremely serious” and stressed the importance of India’s collaboration with Ottawa.
Tensions between India and Canada have escalated following allegations made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who claimed that Indian government agents were involved in Nijjar's murder in Canada. India has firmly denied these accusations, calling them “absurd” and “politically motivated.”
In a recent move, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials linked to the investigation of Nijjar's death, which occurred in British Columbia in 2023. In response, India announced the expulsion of six Canadian diplomats, including Steward Ross Wheeler, the Acting High Commissioner, along with Deputy High Commissioner Patrick Hebert and First Secretary Marie Catherine Joly.
During a press briefing, US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the need for both nations to take the allegations seriously. He said, “We have made clear that the Canadian allegations are extremely serious and they need to be taken seriously, and we wanted to see the Government of India cooperate with Canada and its investigation. But, India has chosen an alternate path.”
Miller acknowledged the ongoing diplomatic tensions but affirmed that the bilateral relationship between the US and India remains robust. He pointed out that both countries have collaborated on numerous issues, including a shared vision for a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. “India continues to be an incredibly strong partner of the United States,” he added.
As the situation evolves, the US is encouraging open communication between India and Canada to resolve the matter.
