New Delhi, September 19: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar criticized the BJP's 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, calling it impractical. He argued that such a system would undermine state parties and disrupt the federal structure of the country.
"The Congress party does not support 'One Nation, One Election.' It is practically unfeasible," Shivakumar said. "The proposal seems to aim at sidelining state parties and ensuring only national parties remain dominant. This approach poses a significant risk and is opposed by the Congress."
In contrast, BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal expressed strong support for the initiative. He emphasized that ongoing elections create disruptions in government operations and hinder national development. Jaiswal praised the Prime Minister and the cabinet for their decision, stating, "The continuous cycle of elections leads to delays in government functions and national development. The 'One Nation, One Election' concept aims to streamline the process by consolidating all elections within a six-month period."
BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan also endorsed the proposal, highlighting its potential to enhance political stability. "This initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will strengthen nation-building and uphold the original spirit of our Constitution, as envisioned by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and other framers," Kesavan said. He noted that from 1952 to 1967, simultaneous elections were conducted, but frequent disruptions occurred when Congress toppled state governments, breaking the cycle of concurrent elections.
The Cabinet has approved the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, which aims to align Lok Sabha and assembly elections, with urban body and panchayat elections scheduled within 100 days. The High-level Committee on Simultaneous Elections, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its detailed report to President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year. The report, comprising 18,626 pages, reflects extensive consultations and research over 191 days, starting from September 2, 2023.
