Malabar 2024 Naval Exercise to Strengthen Indo-Pacific Cooperation from October 8-18

New Delhi: The Maritime Exercise Malabar 2024 is scheduled to be held from October 8 to 18, starting with the Harbour Phase in Visakhapatnam, followed by the Sea Phase. Hosted by India, this year's multilateral naval exercise will see active participation from Australia, Japan, and the United States.

Initially launched in 1992 as a bilateral drill between the US and Indian Navies, Exercise Malabar has grown into a significant platform aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation, fostering mutual understanding, and addressing shared challenges in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific regions. The Indian Navy will deploy a range of platforms, including guided missile destroyers, frigates, submarines, and aircraft, while Australia, the US, and Japan will contribute warships, helicopters, and maritime patrol aircraft. Special Forces from all four nations will also join the exercise.

The focus of Malabar 2024 will be on improving interoperability through various operations, including anti-submarine warfare, air defence, and surface warfare.

A Distinguished Visitors’ Day is set for October 9, with Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar hosting delegations from the participating nations. A Joint Press Conference will also take place during the Harbour Phase, offering insights into the exercise. This year’s event promises to be the most comprehensive yet, featuring complex operational scenarios at sea.
