A British pensioner has died after her car collided head-on with a motorhome on a notorious Alicante province blackspot road. The fatal accident occurred at around 2pm on Tuesday (October 14) on the N-332 in the Santa Pola area, near the iconic lighthouse. The Guardia Civil said that, for reasons yet to be determined, the car driven by the Brit, heading towards Alicante, went onto the opposite carriageway and struck the motorhome.
Local reports say that the 72-year-old woman suffered cardiac arrest after initially surviving the crash. Despite resuscitation efforts, she was confirmed dead at the scene. The victim was an expat who lived on the Orihuela Costa, a coastal region bordering the province of Murcia. The motorhome was driven by a 54-year-old Belgian man who was taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries, but his wife was unharmed, The Olive Press reported.
The incident caused significant traffic jams on the N-332. Forensic officers spent several hours at the crash scene gathering evidence following the crash for a report.
The accident occurred at a location that has a history of frequent accidents. The N-332 by Santa Pola municipality has among the highest vehicle accident statistics in the Valencia region, and this is generally due to cars attempting to overtake with poor visibility.
Overtaking manoeuvres on the single-carriageway road account for the majority of fatalities.
This tragedy comes after a British tourist crashed a supercar Audi worth over £100,000 in June, which saw the vehicle dramatically burst into flames and flip onto its side.
Terrifying video footage shows the luxury car lying in the middle of the road on its roof with smoke billowing out of it. A stream of firefighters was seen racing to the crash, with the driver being dragged out of the wreckage across the road by his arms. The crash took place during the 2025 Mega Run by Cannon Run, a driving holiday company.
Then, less than a month later, Liverpool's Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were tragically killed in a car accident on the A52 highway in Zamora, Spain. The A52 has come under heavy criticism online, with one individual condemning it as a "goat track" due to its poor condition. Lusa news agency reported that the Guardia Civil cited "the bursting of a tyre during overtaking" as the likely cause of the collision.
