There's nothing more frustrating than when you're hungry and ready to cook up your next meal only to realise you've forgotten to take your meat out of the freezer. Thankfully, a simple hack could help speed up the defrosting process.
Most people will know to get their meat out of the freezer the night before or at least some hours before you want to use and let it defrost in the fridge until thawed. You could also put the bag of meat in a bowl of water, or even place it in the microwave with the defrosting option.
However, if you want a quick way to defrost your meat that doesn't use any extra energy, one woman shared her go-to way to defrost meat which you can do while you're prepping your meal.
A woman who is known on TikTok under the username 'moblibuse' has racked up over 52,800 followers by sharing her favourite recipes.
In a recent video, she was seen using frozen mince meat to make a mince and potato roulade. But what really caught her viewer's attention was the way she thawed her meat.
At the beginning of her video, the woman is seen with a frozen block of mince meat she portioned out in a clear plastic bag.
She then went on to grab to large saucepans, placing the first one upside down on the kitchen counter. She then placed the bag of frozen meat on top of the bottom of the pan before placing the other pan on top of the meat, with the bottom on top of the meat.
Next she continued cooking the meal with the tower of pots standing next to her, allowing viewers to watch the meat thaw as she continued prepping her food. And as she was ready to use the meat, she poured the now thawed meat into a pan to fry - but not before showing herself clearly impressed by the thawing hack.
How does the meat thawing hack work?Metal conducts heat efficiently, drawing warmth from the surrounding air to rapidly thaw the meat through excellent contact. This method uses the combined heat-transferring properties of the metal pans to speed up the defrosting process significantly.
Because of this, you can also fill the top pot with warm or hot water in order to speed up the process even more.
While the thawing times vary depending on the meat's thickness and type, but this method can significantly reduce the time compared to air-thawing.
People were quick to share their amazement, as many took to the video's comment section to reveal their thoughts.
"I had a horrible day but I learnt how to defrost meat... thank you," one person said.
Another person wrote: "Oh man! I just got some minced meat out!!!! I'm going to try it now!"
Things to remember when defrosting your foodAccording to the Food Standards Agency, the best way to defrost meat is to put it in the fridge until it's thawed. This prevents the meat from getting too warm, and thereby getting exposed to bacteria.
It's also important to use food within 24 hours after it's been fully defrosted, as it will go bad in the same way as if it were fresh.
When defrosting your food, make sure it has been fully defrosted and that the middle and most dense bit of the food is fully thawed. Partially defrosted food may not cook evenly and this means that harmful bacteria could survive the cooking process.
