Eddie Howe gives Alexander Isak injury update as Anthony Gordon hint dropped

Anthony Gordon may find himself leading the line for an extended period with Newcastle team-mate Alexander Isak potentially out of action until after the international break.

The young England winger was deployed up front against Man City on Saturday, stepping into Isak's shoes after suffering a fractured toe. Gordon shone up top, slotting home a penalty that earned the Magpies a 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

Isak sustained the fracture on September 15 during Newcastle's victory over Wolves and even took to the pitch at Fulham six days later after having a painkiller injection that only partially did the trick.

When quizzed if Isak made the injury worse, manager Eddie Howe - who confirmed Isak's absence for Tuesday nights Carabao Cup clash with League Two side Wimbledon - replied: "I don't think that would be the case.

"It was one of those situations where, if he could tolerate the pain, he would be fine. He tolerated the pain for about 80 minutes before he became aware of any feeling back in that toe.

"It was either he'd be out until probably after the international break initially, or he could carry on playing as normal if he could tolerate the feelings and the effects of the injury. He hasn't been able to do that, so we're back to the original diagnosis, I think."

Howe is crossing his fingers for his star striker to recover in time for their clash against Everton on Saturday. If Isak isn't fit for the trip to Goodison Park, his participation in Sweden's upcoming Nations League games also hangs in the balance.

Pressed on whether he would prefer Isak not to head on international duty, Howe replied: "It all depends on if he's fit or not. Fingers crossed he can be and can be involved against Everton and can go with his international team."

With Callum Wilson sidelined by injury and young Will Osula still adapting after his summer move, Newcastle's attacking options are limited. The Magpies' boss hinted that Gordon might continue to lead the line, despite believing his talents are best utilised on the wing.

He said: "I'd probably still say that his best position is as a left-winger currently, but he can and does have the ability to play different roles. Number nine is one of them and he can play that very, very well.

"But it is different for him. I think he has so many great skills as a winger. His ability to play one-versus-one, his decision making in wide areas is as good as there is in the Premier League, in my opinion, so you've got to be careful before changing that too much."
