Most Sundays, the BBC provides soothing viewing with a line-up of fan favourites, including Songs of Praise, Countryfile, and Antiques Roadshow. However, this week, the broadcasters changed some of the programming to make way for women's football instead.
BBC One covered the Women's UEFA Euro 2025 final, which was presented from St Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland. They provided pre and post match commentary, with the show beginning at 3.40pm and kick off at 5pm. The sports special was set to continue until 7.30pm meaning that some regular programmes had to be moved around. As a result, Countryfile was bumped down to BBC Two, to maintain its usual start time of 6pm. And while Songs of Praise kept its regular 1.15pm slot on BBC One, there were still complaints about the changes later in the day.
Posting to X (formerly Twitter), one fan fumed: "Why do they have to put the football on BBC One and ITV? What if someone like me doesn't want to watch it." Another echoed: "This is unbelievable. BBC and ITV have frigging women's football on so I'm missing Songs of Praise for this s***e."
"The same football on BBC1 and ITV. Not everyone likes football," one more fumed. Another raged: "BBC's coverage of the Women's Euros starting an hour before games! Yap, yap, yap! I cringe, put my fingers in my ears, turn over channels, but most of the time, 'I go out'! Someone, 'No name'! Wrecked a question of sport, football focus + almost match of the day! Dreadful!"
Others complained about the presenting line up, with one moaning: "#Eurosfinal given the choice, I've always watched sport on BBC rather than ITV, but just had to switch to ITV for the #Lionesses game tonight because I just can't stand to hear Jill Scott's voice. Sorry."
Another echoed: "BBC or ITV, which to watch... basically, pick the least s*** commentary team. Pretty difficult when they're both absolutely brutal. #WomensEuro2025."
While a third said: "My mind was made up when the BBC commentator started with a virtue signalling rant so it's ITV."
However, one viewer hit back at those complaining as they wrote: "'Why is the football on BBC1 and ITV? I dont want to watch football'.
"You have 100s of other channels and if you can read this you have the internet. BBC and ITV paid for rights and they are going to use them. You aren't short on options. Here, watch a film."
The football coverage is hosted by Gabby Logan as the Lionesses look to get their revenge with a win in the final. The British team refused to settle for semi-final heartbreak and chose history instead - scoring a late, late equaliser to avoid a shock exit at the hands of Italy and then bagging an extra-time winner that has sent them to a third consecutive major tournament final.
