Kyle responded directly: "They are not awkward at all, they are two leaders who share common ground on key issues. I think you saw two people who were getting on."
It comes as Trump sat down with Starmer yesterday to answer questions from journalists, and the US president could not help but take the opportunity to criticise the fiercely liberal Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan
Appearing at the Trump golf resort in Turnberry, South Ayrshire, the president was asked by a journalist if he plans to visit London during his state visit to the UK later this year. He replied: "I'm not a fan of your mayor. I think he's done a terrible job, the mayor of London... a nasty person."
GB News challenged Cabinet Minister Peter Kyle as the hosts questioned the "awkward" display between Donald Trump and Sir Keir Starmer on Monday. The president is known to have a warm relationship with Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, but appeared distant towards the Labour leader when they sat down to discuss pressing political issues.
The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology dismissed speculation that the two men struggled to connect during their face-to-face talks and said: "There was a rapport between President Trump and Keir Starmer". Starmer is continuing his efforts to strengthen Britain's relationships with key global figures amid challenging times for his party in the UK recently.
GB News host Christopher Hope who had stepped in for colleague Eamonn Holmes, who is currently on holiday, said: "Did you feel sorry for your pal Keir Starmer yesterday shuffling awkwardly next to Donald Trump yesterday."
Trump is on a four-day informal summer visit, and previously came to blows with Khan when he branded the mayor a "stone cold loser. " Sitting beside the president, Starmer quickly intervened as Trump blasted Khan, saying: "He's a friend of mine, actually."
In response to the furious display, a very diplomatic mayoral spokesperson stated that Khan was "delighted that President Trump wants to come to the greatest city in the world".
"He'd see how our diversity makes us stronger not weaker; richer, not poorer," the spokesperson added. "Perhaps these are the reasons why a record number of Americans have applied for British citizenship under his presidency."
