Learning how to do your makeup - with several catastrophic failures along the way - is all part and parcel of growing up. I remember being really young and developing a fascination with all things glam, spending ages looking at and trialling my mum and aunt's selection of products, which they were nice enough to let me experiment with.
I grew up in the age of YouTube tutorials, so many an hour was spent watching and trying my best to copy the experts on-screen. And when I picked up that liquid eyeliner for the first time, all other looks went out the window. A simple black flick has been my go-to for as long as I can remember - that is, until I paid a visit to Charlotte Tilbury at the weekend.

The expert makeup artists working for one of the most iconic beauty brands worldwide were, unsurprisingly, full of valuable knowledge when I went in to get my makeup done at their store in Glasgow.
Having booked out the Pillow Talk room - named after their most popular lipstick shade - my family and I had a lovely afternoon with the artists who gave us all a fabulous makeover. You, as the customer, are calling the shots when it comes to what you want done, but the experts are always keen to offer their own tips and advice, and they definitely know what they're talking about.
Like I said, I'm very much a creature of habit when it comes to beauty, so I was fully prepared to request my usual black liner. However, the makeup artist suggested we try out a brown pencil instead, which originally I wasn't sure about.
The artist explained that brown eyeliner is less of a harsh contrast compared to black, especially if you have blue eyes. It creates a much softer look whilst still defining the eyes and making them really pop.
And after she'd applied it, still with that signature flick, I couldn't believe how good it looked. I always thought that black liner was the only way, but I've definitely been converted.
The product she used on me was the Super Nudes Duo Liner in Nude/Brown, creating the winged look with the darker colour and using the bright shade in my waterline to open up the eyes even more.

I think makeup should be fun - which is why looking "natural" is never really a concern for me - but I will admit that the brown liner is a much more subtle look that I actually ended up loving, especially with the brown and gold shadow she also used on me.
Because it was a pencil and not a liquid liner, it didn't crack either, which is often a problem. Hours passed, and it still looked as fresh as when it was just applied.
So if you're like me and reckon your makeup routine is in dire need of a refresh, I'd really recommend switching to a brown liner. It still gives you that classic definition but without being too harsh, creating a lovely fresh look that's perfect for the autumn months.
