Liam Payne has died at the age of 31. The former One Direction star was in one of the UK's most cherished boy bands and captured the hearts of millions after skyrocketing to stardom on The X Factor.

The 31 year old died on Wednesday, October 16 after plunging from the balcony of his room on the third floor of the CasaSur Palmero hotel in Buenos Aires.

Alberto Crescenti, the head of the state emergency medical system, confirmed the pop star fell into an internal courtyard at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel.

The singer - who starred in One Direction alongside Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - previously admitted that he suffered some "very dark years" whilst handling fame.

Speaking to the BBC, he confessed: "When I was younger, I went straight in on the whisky. I tend to pick my poison early, then I stick with it until it bores me."

Liam shares a son, Bear, with former Girls Aloud singer Cheryl. He also added to the BBC: "There were a couple of very dark years of me going through extreme peril with different mental health things."

His death came hours after his final posts on social media in which he declared it was a "lovely day in Argentina" and said he was having a late breakfast with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, who is believed to have left Buenos Aires and flown to the US prior to the tragedy.

The pop star spoke about his plans for the day in a post on Snapchat telling his followers he was hoping to play polo.

Just a few days earlier, Liam was spotted supporting his ex bandmate Niall Horan in Argentina. In one snap, he took a selfie with Niall and said "Reunited."

He also told his fans that he was excited to travel to South America to see his old friend and that it had been a while since they last spoke.
