Outlander's distraught fans cry 'we're not ready' as final season finishes filming

Outlander's production has officially come to an end for the show's final season and fans are struggling to cope.

Millions of viewers are currently waiting for the epic drama to return for the second half of season seven, picking up as Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) finally make it back to Scotland.

Meanwhile, the cast and crew have been deep into production in Scotland for the eighth and final season which will bring Starz' hit drama to a close.

Based on the bestselling novels by Diana Gabaldon, the final instalment is expected to have fans reaching for the tissues when the Fraser clan says farewell.

The show's official Instagram account has now confirmed that all episodes of the last ever season have been filmed.

"Today marks the final day of filming on the final season of #Outlander," the caption on Friday's post reads.

"Words cannot express the gratitude owed to each and every hard-working cast and crew member who brought this incredible series to life and every single fan who supports it with passion, creativity, and dedication.

"Outlander really is more than just a show, it's a family, and while filming might be ending, there's so much more to this journey that's just beginning."

Even with an extra half a season to go before the final season airs, fans were left devastated as they realised just how close they were to Outlander coming to an end.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT'S A WRAP I'M NOT READY," someone exclaimed in the comments.

"Thank you to everyone involved," another replied. "My eyes filled with tears when I scrolled to this. I knew it was coming but this was completely unexpected.

"I have never and never will again love a series, its characters and cast like I've loved Outlander."

While a third devotee insisted: "Noooo please don't stop... you guys can time travel forever we will never tire of you."

"At a loss for words," said another. "Need time to process this. We will cherish our Outlander family forever."

Series lead Sam Heughan also shared a series of snaps commemorating his time as Highlander hunk Jamie, writing, "What a journey. So many memories, incredible people I have been fortunate to work with and now can call friends. So many people to thank."

One fan replied to Sam: "Crying over here. The best book series turned TV series! Thank you for an incredible 10 years! Simply the best!"

"Seeing bts pics from all the seasons is actually so bittersweet," another said. And a third commented: "I am not gonna cry......"

Thankfully, the saga isn't quite over, as Outlander will be followed up with a new prequel, Blood of My Blood, which promises to lift the lid on the mysterious origins of Claire and Jamie's parents.

Outlander season 7, part 2 premieres Sunday, November 22 on Starz.
