Potatoes are a staple in any household kitchen. They can be prepared in a variety of ways, from jacket potatoes to crispy fries or, if you are on the fancier side, dauphinoise. The only question is how they should be properly stored to ensure long life. It's easy to assume that every vegetable should go in the fridge or the cupboard.
While potatoes normally last for several weeks, there is a storage hack that's said to keep them tasting fresh and for up to two months. Food website The Kitchn tested several ways to store potatoes to verify which was the most effective when it comes to preserving their taste and quality for longer. And one, they said, came out as a clear winner: storing potatoes in a cardboard box.

The hack has been tested and trialled against all the other methods most people would think about first, such as putting them in the fridge, keeping them in their original packaging or moving them to a bowl.
But none, the experts said, worked as effectively as moving the potatoes to a cardboard box.
When stored in a cardboard box, Ann Taylor Pittman of The Kitchn shared: ''There was a noticeable difference in the appearance of these spuds, as they all had perfectly taut skins. The Yukon golds sprouted just a bit, but the russets did not.
"All of the potatoes felt nice and firm. When I cut them, they felt snappy, firm, and moist. After I boiled them, I was surprised by their flavor. Compared to all of the other potatoes I tested, these had the richest flavor, like a slightly concentrated baked potato. I wouldn't have believed there would be such a difference if I hadn't experienced it firsthand.''
The expert added she kept the potatoes on a single layer and and didn't seal the box, leaving the top flaps "barely folded down" and "mostly open".
After two months, the website read, "potatoes stored in a cardboard box fared the best in terms of texture, lack of sprouts, and flavor."
Potatoes should be stored in a dry and cool place, if possible, as they are meant for long storage. However, if you want to go the extra mile and ensure they exceed their usual expectancy and want more golden and moist-textured potatoes when cooking, this simple method will work wonders.
