Chennai: Residents should know that the scheme providing 100 units of free electricity to domestic consumers will not be withdrawn. The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) junked the rumours circulating on the internet, claiming that the scheme will be scrapped as the officials have noticed its misuse by some locals. According to Tangedco, residents will continue to avail the facilities under the scheme as there are no such plans of its withdrawal. This statement follows a social media post claiming that the free first 100 units would be taken away due to some consumers misusing the scheme, leading to losses for Tangedco. Tangedco said the post was false. "The information circulating on social media is incorrect. For accurate updates, please visit our official website," Tangedco posted on X. Officials stated that any policy change can only be made by the government. “No such decision has been made. The free power will continue as it is," they said.

Domestic consumers can use the first 100 units of electricity free of charge, and the next 100 units will be charged at 50 per cent of the base price, as long as their bi-monthly consumption does not exceed 500 units. The state government compensates Tangedco for any losses through a subsidy.
