A massive cardboard fire broke out inside the recycling factory and quickly moved into a structure, according to the Rogers Fire Department. Alarms were raised throughout the area by witnesses from Bentonville, Pea Ridge, and Eureka Springs who said they could see the smoke and flames from a great distance. Several fire departments, including those from Bentonville, Pea Ridge, Benton County, Lowell, Springdale, Little Flock, and Rogers, were sent to put out the fire. In a separate occurrence, a sizable fire broke out at Fort Chaffee in the River Valley, although it was later reduced to a level that the authorities thought to be safe. An update was given by the Greenwood Police Department, which said that the winds lessened around 1:18 a.m. on Wednesday, controlling the fire and making things easier for the emergency personnel. As to the statement provided by an Arkansas National Guard official, the fire broke out on Tuesday during an ordinary training exercise. Fort Chaffee's post commander, Colonel David Gibbons, praised the fire department for their quick reaction. He commended them for their efforts all night long, highlighting how they handled the issue by using internal fire breaks and procedures. Gibbons did not, however, provide any precise information on the training practice that started the fire or its precise cause.Residents in the region are still vigilant about possible fire threats while investigations progress, particularly in areas close to industrial activity.
