The world of Tron is returning to the big screen after more than four decades. Disney has officially released the first trailer for Tron: Ares, the latest chapter in the popular sci-fi series. The original Tron movie came out in 1982, followed by the sequel Tron: Legacy in 2010. Now, fans are getting a fresh look at this digital universe in the upcoming third film.
The trailer introduces Jared Leto in the lead role, playing a character named Ares. According to Variety, Ares is a program from the digital world who has been sent into the real world—a first for the Tron universe. The cast is filled with well-known stars, including Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Gillian Anderson. Evan Peters plays a character named Julian Dillinger, and fans might recognize the last name—Dillinger was the villain in the original film, played by David Warner.
Although Jeff Bridges’ character Kevin Flynn doesn’t appear on screen in the trailer, fans can hear his voice toward the end. Flynn is heard saying to Ares, “Ready? Cause there’s no going back.” Bridges is also set to return in the film, continuing the story of the computer genius from the earlier movies.
The trailer opens with a dramatic chase through a city as rogue programs race through the streets on light cycles. One scene shows a police car being sliced in half by the glowing light trail left behind by the futuristic bike. The mix of the real world and the digital game-like environment gives the film a fast-paced and intense look.
Jeff Bridges spoke about the movie during its reveal at the 2024 D23 Expo. He said it was hard to believe that they made the first Tron back in 1982 and expressed surprise and gratitude that the series has lasted so long and gained such a strong following.
Music fans have another reason to be excited—Nine Inch Nails, the band known for its powerful and moody sound, is creating the score for the film. The group is led by Trent Reznor and his longtime collaborator Atticus Ross. Both have won Oscars and Grammys for their music in films like The Social Network, Soul, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Tron: Ares is scheduled to hit theaters on October 10, 2025, and promises to be an exciting new chapter in the beloved sci-fi franchise.
