Newly wed Kristen Stewart makes directorial debut with 'The Chronology of Water'; gets a 4-minute standing ovation at Cannes

This year, Cannes is going to be seeing a lot of actors officially making their directorial debuts. One such celebrity was Cannes regular Kristen Stewart. The actress, most popularly known for her role in the ‘Twilight’ franchise, recently made her debut as a director with ‘The Chronology of Water’, which received high praises at the festival this year, marking an emotional and touching moment for Stewart.

The film, after its screening, received a four-and-a-half-minute standing ovation. This marked a major and pivotal point for Stewart as she became emotional over the matter, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

As the premiere came to a close, Kristen hugged the cast and crew members and then shared a sweet moment with wife Dylan Myers. After this, the actress could be seen hugging Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux and then taking the mic from him to take over.

As she then got up on stage along with stars of the film Imogen Poots, Esmé Creed-Miles, and Michael Epp, the newly made director shared a statement with the crowd. She shared in her statement that “I don’t have anything else to say; I left it all on the screen. Just thank you all for being here. Seriously, we finished the movie five minutes ago — it’s not even done. We got so lucky, and I’m so grateful to be here.”

Stewart also shared that “This is an absolutely insane, surreal experience to be able to be here and watch this with all of you guys.” Actress Imogen Poots, who played the lead role in the film, thanked Stewart after she handed the mic over to her and said, “She’s the best director, and I hope you all liked the movie.”

Before her film officially debuted, Kristen in an interview shared her statement and opinion on how the film may do at the Film Festival. She stated that “I cannot believe it, this is my f****** first draft … We’re running in here half-dressed. But I’m into it.” The actress and now director also joked about how she hopes that the film does bad and that making mistakes is “hot” and a part of life.

About ‘The Chronology of Water’Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut explores the life of Lidia Yuknavitch, who in her memoir from 2011, details the sexual abuse she was subjected to by her father, how she recovered from it, and how she found her calling in writing years later. The film was originally shot in Latvia and Malta, where the team spent six weeks filming the movie last year. Kristen Stewart herself worked on adapting the memoir for her film, alongside co-writer Andy Mingo.
