Superman trailer hidden buzz: Netizens speculate Robert Pattinson's 'Batman may join the DCU due to THIS scene

Send Push
A fleeting moment in the latest 'Superman' trailer has stirred up fresh speculation about whether Matt Reeves’ 'The Batman' franchise might secretly tie into James Gunn’s expanding DC Universe. While the new footage largely centres on showcasing David Corenswet’s Superman and introducing characters like Metamorpho, the Engineer, Guy Gardner, and Ultraman, one rare, minute detail has caught fans’ attention: a news headline in the background referring to “major floods causing suffering.”

social media buzz

Some viewers are linking this to the devastating Gotham City flood caused by the Riddler in The Batman (2022), suggesting a potential connection between the two superheroes' worlds. Although no official confirmation about such a crossover has been released by the creators, fans can’t stop buzzing about the possibility.

The trailer also delves deeper into the dynamics of Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s relationship, while establishing that Superman will challenge the very idea of a superhero in this iteration of the DCU. Facing resistance from both villains like Lex Luthor and existing members of the superhero community, Corenswet’s Superman appears to be entering a world already populated with extraordinary figures. Guy Gardner’s presence hints at the Lanterns’ upcoming DCU project, while Hawkgirl’s inclusion subtly suggests Hawkman’s existence. Rick Flag Jr.’s appearance directly connects to Creature Commandos.

DC Heads Reiterate the Separation of Two Bat-Worlds

Though fans may enjoy connecting dots between Reeves' Gotham and the DCU, both James Gunn and Peter Safran have consistently maintained that The Batman exists in a different universe. As Gunn himself has stated, “It’s certainly not the plan” to bring Robert Pattinson’s version of the Dark Knight into the DCU fold. Peter Safran echoed the sentiment, explaining that “it’s imperative” for a new Batman to emerge in The Brave and the Bold, a project set within the official DCU timeline.

The first glimpse of this new Batman reportedly came in Creature Commandos, while Reeves is pressing ahead with his own trilogy. The Batman – Part II is scheduled for 2027, with a third instalment also in the works. Director Andy Muschietti has reassured fans that careful planning is underway to avoid overlap or creative collision between the two Batman versions.

Parallel Paths

The decision to keep the two Batman timelines separate may ultimately benefit both creative teams. Reeves' gritty, noir-style storytelling stands apart from the interconnected, superhero-filled landscape James Gunn is building. If Reeves were required to adapt to fit a shared universe, it could dilute his carefully curated vision. Likewise, the DCU needs a more adaptable Batman who can fluidly exist alongside Superman, Wonder Woman, and other larger-than-life characters.
