A Perfect Return: Scheffler’s First Win of 2025

Scottie Scheffler ’s return to his hometown of McKinney, Texas, for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson was nothing short of spectacular. The world’s top-ranked golfer stormed to an 8-shot victory, capturing his first win of the 2025 season in dominant fashion. Scheffler, who had a commanding lead throughout the tournament, sealed his victory with a final-round 63, pushing his total score to a remarkable 31-under for the week.

The victory was especially meaningful for Scheffler, who couldn’t contain his emotions as he spoke about the tournament’s significance. “It’s my first start as a pro, 11 years ago, I had my sister caddying for me... It feels like a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice for little moments like these. They're pretty special,” Scheffler said, holding his son on CBS.

This triumph marked a full circle moment for Scheffler, who made his PGA Tour debut at the Byron Nelson in 2014 as a 17-year-old amateur. His performance solidified his place in the tournament’s history, becoming the first Dallas-area high school golfer to win since 2007 and the third player to go wire-to-wire in the event, joining the ranks of Tom Watson (1980).

Record-Breaking Start and Unstoppable Play

Scheffler’s dominance was clear from the first round. He opened with a 10-under 61, which featured a blistering 29 on the front nine and back-to-back birdies to close out his round. That set the tone for the entire week. On Friday, he followed up with an 8-under 63, securing a six-shot lead at the midway point. He was bogey-free at that stage, just one stroke off the PGA Tour ’s 36-hole scoring record.

While his pace slowed a little in the latter rounds, the competition never came close. Scheffler fired a 5-under 66 on Saturday to extend his lead to an insurmountable eight shots, the largest 54-hole lead on Tour since 2011.

On Sunday, Scheffler was in full control, even briefly extending his lead to 10 shots after an easy eagle on the par-5 ninth. His play remained flawless, despite a small mistake on the par-3 17th, where he bogeyed after an uncharacteristic chip error. Nonetheless, his final 62 sealed the deal, securing the $1.782 million winner’s check and marking his 14th career PGA Tour victory.

Scheffler’s pursuit of the Tour’s all-time scoring record fell just short when he missed a final putt on the 18th green, but he still finished with a 253 total score, putting him in an elite group of just three players, alongside Justin Thomas and Ludvig Åberg, to reach that mark.

Notable Finishes and Insights

Behind Scheffler, Erik van Rooyen finished solo second at 23-under, a solid performance but far from challenging for the lead. Sam Stevens impressed with a 7-under 64, climbing to third place. In a thrilling final-round surge, Jordan Spieth shot a 9-under 62, jumping 19 spots to finish fourth — his best finish of 2025 and his lowest round of the season. Spieth, who hasn’t won since 2022, reflected on Scheffler’s dominance, saying, “What he’s been doing is inspiring... I’ve got to get better.”

Scheffler’s victory at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson serves as a reminder of why he’s ranked the world’s No. 1 golfer. While his 2025 season had been a bit quieter with a hand injury earlier in the year, this win was a clear statement: Scheffler is back, and he’s as formidable as ever.

With seven Tour wins last season, including prestigious titles like the Masters and The Players Championship, Scheffler is poised for a big year. His victory at TPC Craig Ranch offers a fresh start, and the momentum from this win could propel him as he heads into the rest of the season. The 2025 PGA Tour is in for a treat with Scheffler back in top form.
