MUMBAI: Within 14 hours after a garment trader and his burqa-clad girlfriend on a scooter allegedly pranked actor Salman Khan 's producer-screenwriter father Salim Khan at Bandra promenade by invoking the name of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi , police arrested Umar Asif Shaikh (26) and Ashma Shaikh (22) from Sewri on Wednesday, reported.
"During interrogation, Umar said he had carried out the threat as a prank to impress his girlfriend," said a police officer.
On Wednesday, at 8.45am, after his morning walk at Bandra promenade, Khan (88) was resting near Windermere building, around 250m away from his Galaxy Apartments residence, when Umar halted his scooter next to him. Umar allegedly asked, "Lawrence Bishnoi ko bheju kya? (Shall I send Lawrence Bishnoi?)", and rode away.
A shocked Khan told his bodyguard constable Deepak Borse that he managed to memorise only four digits of the scooter's number plate - 7444. Based on a complaint , Bandra police registered a case. DCP (Zone IX) Raj Tilak Roshan supervised a team, comprising senior inspector Sanjay Marathe, inspector Pradeep Kerkar, assistant inspectors Vijay Acharekar, Bajrang Jagtap, Tushar Sawant and Bandra police station detection staff, that scanned 80 CCTV footages from Carter Road to Sewri, identified the scooter and its registration number, and obtained the owner's address from RTO. By evening, police reached Sewri and arrested Umar and Ashma. The duo has been booked under the BNS sections 292 (public nuisance), 353 (2) (public mischief), and 3 (5) (criminal act done with common intention).
Wednesday's incident comes in the backdrop of security concerns for Salman and his family members, including the April 14 shooting incident outside their Bandra residence, and threat letter found by Salim Khan in June 2022.
