NEW DELHI: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh , observing the International Day of Non-Violence on Wednesday, emphasised the importance of peace and dialogue amid growing conflict in West Asia . He called to end the "deepening cycle of violence and counter-violence", referring to the tense situation.
"Thanks to an initiative taken by the Congress-led UPA Government, since 2007 the United Nations observes October 2nd as the International Day of Non-Violence. The Indian National Congress recalls this in the midst of an alarming escalation of remorseless hostilities in West Asia. This is imposing an unacceptable humanitarian price on thousands upon thousands of innocent men, women and children," Ramesh said in a post on X.
He then stressed upon resolution, saying, "There is a fierce urgency for peace and dialogue in the region that is now engulfed by a deepening cycle of violence and counter-violence. The world's conscience seems to have been dulled by the forces of revenge. It needs to be reawakened by the forces of reconciliation."
The situation in West Asia has been tense recently with continuous exchange fire between Israel and Iran -backed Hezbollah with both attacking each other through rockets and missiles along with a recent ground invasion by Israel in Iran's territory.
Israel has killed multiple Hezbollah commanders in the past week including their chief Hassan Nasrallah while Iran, in response, launched over 200 missiles on Wednesday towards Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described this attack as a "big mistake" and promised a strong response. “Iran made a big mistake today and will pay for it. The Iranian regime does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and our determination to take revenge on our enemies,” Netanyahu said.
India also issued its response saying they are 'closely monitoring the recent escalation' while advising to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran.
Following the death of Hezbollah chief Nasrallah, Israeli PM Netanyahu also cautioned Iran's Ayatollah regime, asserting that those who target Israel will face repercussions.
