SILCHAR: A foreign-origin drone landed unexpectedly near the India-Bangladesh border in Assam's Sribhumi on Tuesday night, causing concern among local residents and prompting immediate action from security forces.
The unmanned aerial vehicle was located atop a house in Kuripatti, approximately 100 metres from the international boundary. Upon receiving information from locals, personnel from the Charbazar town police outpost took possession of the device.
The incident has raised concern about border monitoring and possible illegal activities, particularly given the current political uncertainty in Bangladesh and increasing regional tensions following recent Pakistan-linked security incidents.
"We are treating the matter seriously. A forensic examination of the drone is underway to trace its flight path, origin, and purpose," said a senior police officer involved in the investigation. Initial assessments indicate the possibility of the drone entering from Bangladesh, though investigators are considering all scenarios.
The BSF has strengthened its monitoring and electronic surveillance across the 92-km border stretch in Sribhumi district.
Security officials are investigating potential connections to espionage or contraband activities.
"We're not ruling out surveillance attempts or even dry runs for larger operations," a BSF source said on condition of anonymity.
