'Dummy CM ... new Manomohan Singh': BJP reacts to Atishi becoming Delhi CM

NEW DELHI: BJP took a dig at Atishi Marlena after she took oath as the third women chief minister of Delhi on Saturday evening.

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assemnly, Vijender Gupta said that Atishi is a dummy CM and it will be a remote-control run government.

"It is a dummy government and a dummy chief minister. It will be a remote-control run government," said Gupta after Atishi took oath as CM.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla even called Atishi 'new Manmohan Singh '. "I congratulate the people of Delhi as they got the 'new Manmohan Singh' as the real power will be with Arvind Kejriwal - he will be the de facto CM and Atishi will be de jure CM," said Poonawalla.

"The Court has given such bail conditions that Arvind Kejriwal wasn't able to function as CM directly, hence an OPS system has begun here. But, we all know how nature and character aren't changed but just the face," he added.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari wrote to the newly sworn-in CM and urged her to order an inquiry into Delhi's liquor policy and probe the revenue loss of the government.

He also asked her to pay attention to the school infrastructure and reduce the electricity and water bills.

"Now you have taken the oath of the Constitution to serve the people of Delhi. Being an MP of Delhi, I have expectations from you and also make the following request: 1. Why was the liquor policy withdrawn and how much revenue was lost in it? 2. How were the semi-permanent structures of the school - rooms with iron-lattice roofs, which are made for Rs. 5 lakh, made for Rs. 25 lakh?," wrote Tiwari in an official letter sent to Atishi.

He also requested that the work to repair the roads under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) be carried out immediately.

However, he also congratulated the Atishi and said the party will extend full support to her. "I extend good wishes to Atishi for becoming the third woman CM of Delhi. I have written to her over concerns regarding Delhi. We will extend full support to her in the coming 3-4 months," said Tiwari.

At 42, Atishi has become the 17th female chief minister in India. Five cabinet ministers including Saurabh Bhardwaj, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Imran Hussain and Mukesh Ahlawat also took the oath of office during the ceremony which was held at Raj Niwas.

However, her tenure will be brief, as Delhi's assembly elections are slated for February next year. Despite the short time frame, her government faces the challenge of fast-tracking several key policies and welfare schemes, including the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, the updated Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, and the doorstep delivery of services initiative.

Atishi previously held 13 portfolios in the outgoing Arvind Kejriwal government, including finance, revenue, public works department (PWD), power, and education.
