NEW DELHI: Maldives president Mohammad Muizzu and first lady Sajidha Mohamed , visited Taj Mahal in Agra, on Tuesday morning. The historical monument remained closed for the public for two hours during the visit according to officials. "The booking offices at the monument will be closed for the public for two hours before the monument is closed," Raj Kumar Patel, Superintending Archaeologist informed.

The Maldivian president Muizzu, and his wife arrived in Delhi for a 4 day visit to India. As per media reports, they traveled with a high-level delegation of government officials on a special flight arranged by the Indian government .

During his visit from 6 October to 10 October, he will be meeting with external affair minister S. Jaishankar and other top ministers to discuss various bilateral, regional, and international issues.

This will be the second time that Muizzu is visiting India this year after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this June.

After coming to power, Muizzu government took several steps that were unconventional from the point of view of India-Maldives ties. He ran his whole presidential campaign on the lines of 'India Out'. The removal of Indian troops from the country was the main election campaign.

He said that both nations now have a better understanding of each other’s concerns and defense cooperation between them will always be a priority. He also justified the expulsion of Indian troops though saying it reflected the will of the local people.

Muizzu also thanked India for its timely emergency financial assistance, including by way of rolling over T-bills subscribed by SBI amounting to $ 100 million in May and September 2024 for a further period of one year that provided the much-needed financial cushion for Maldives in addressing its urgent financing needs.

Foreign secretary Vikram Misri informed that President Muizzu also invited PM Modi to visit Maldives next year which he accepted.
