BHUBANESWAR: Crime Branch launched a manhunt to arrest some miscreants, who allegedly assaulted an Army captain and his fiancée following a road rage in Bhubaneswar late on Sunday night. The couple, who had subsequently gone to Bharatpur police station to report the matter, was allegedly tortured in custody, triggering nation-wide furore and leading to suspension of five cops.

“The original case involving the scuffle and road rage for which the couple had visited the Bharatpur police station is being investigated by the Crime Branch. CCTV footage of the area is being verified. The accused would be identified and arrested soon,” DGP Y B Khurania said.

The 29-year-old Army captain told the Crime Branch that 10 to 12 men came in three cars and intercepted his vehicle near Patharagadia late on Sunday night. His fiancée was also present in his car.

The captain alleged that the hooligans hurled abuses and passed lewd remarks at his fiancée. When he resisted, the accused allegedly dragged him out of his car and thrashed him. They threatened the couple of dire consequences when the Army officer tried to film the sequence of events on his phone. The Army officer, who meanwhile noted down the registration number of one of the cars of the troublemakers, pleaded mercy when the outlaws started misbehaving with his fiancée.

Apprehending trouble, the couple somehow managed to escape from the place and rushed to Bharatpur police station. According to the Army officer, he reached Bharatpur police station around 2 am and requested the cops on duty to send a police control room (PCR) van to arrest the goons. The couple alleged that the police subjected them to torture instead of acting on their complaint.

“We are looking for one of the vehicles whose registration number OD-14J-0455 was shared by the Army officer with us. The Army officer claimed that the unknown people picked up a scuffle with him and his fiancée without any provocation. Once we arrest the suspects, clarity will emerge about the reason of altercation,” a Crime Branch officer said.
