The next time the Memphis Grizzlies play, Ja Morant won't be there. The team stated on Saturday that star guard Ja Morant had been suspended for one game due to behavior that was considered harmful to the squad. But the suspension will affect Morant's finances in addition to his playing time. Following Friday's defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers, Morant made remarks that were deemed "detrimental to the team."
Because of his frustrations, Morant may become a desirable trade target for clubs looking to make a big deal, thus all eyes will be on the Grizzlies. Morant has already made six appearances this season. He averages 3.3 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 20.8 points.
Ja Morant’s postgame clash with his coach has now cost him a suspension, and a hefty financial hit
Bobby Marks of ESPN reports that Morant's compensation will be reduced by $272,042 due to the missed game. That amount is equivalent to 1/145 of his $39,446,090 deal with the Grizzlies. Although the Grizzlies were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night, the game's highlight was revealed after it was over.
When multiple media outlets asked enquiries, Morant referred them all to the Grizzlies' coaching staff. He disclosed that before the media entered the locker area, there was a "spiel."
“Go ask the coaching staff,” Morant said when asked what went wrong for him specifically. “Go ask them. They had a whole spiel in here.”
When asked once more what Memphis should have done better, he reiterated:
“According to them, probably don’t play me… Honestly. That’s basically what the message was after. That’s cool. … It’s cool, man.”
The Grizzlies chose to punish Morant for one game as a result. Announcing the news, ESPN insider, Shams Charania said:
“Suspension comes as a result of Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo challenging Morant's leadership and effort in a postgame exchange after loss to the Lakers on Friday night -- to which Morant responded in a tone deemed inappropriate, sources said…”
According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, Morant is anticipated to lose out on $272,042 after missing one game without getting paid. Morant is presently in the middle of a five-year contract with the Grizzlies. He consented to conditions that included $197.2 million through 2028 when he signed.
The 2023–2024 season marked the start of the contract. Morant earned $34.00 million that year. He made $36.72 million last season. Morant's current salary with the Grizzlies is $39.44 million.
Beyond the 2025–2026 campaign, Memphis' standout guard is guaranteed two more seasons. He will make more than $40.00 million next season ($42.16 million, to be exact). His compensation for the last season will be $44.88 million.
Ja Morant’s season takes another unexpected turn as tensions rise under new leadership
After Taylor Jenkins was fired near the close of the previous season, Morant and the Grizzlies had to get used to a new coaching staff under Tuomas Iisalo. Morant has averaged 20.8 points through six games, but he will now miss the Grizzlies' road game against the Raptors on Sunday. He will be able to return on Monday when Memphis plays Detroit.
One man is still regarded as a potential future torchbearer for the game, even if he has no desire for the job, while the rest of the NBA wonders which player might ultimately take over the big mantle that LeBron James and Stephen Curry have carried for years as the league's faces.
Blake Griffin expressed his disapproval of Morant's style of play in a public speech earlier today on Morant's performance against the Lakers. Prior to the ban, Morant averaged 20.8 points, 6.7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds while playing in all six Memphis games.
