Israel 's military reported on Saturday that its air force carried out strikes on thousands of rocket launchers in southern Lebanon , which were described as posing an "immediate" threat to Israeli territory. The strikes come amid escalating fears of a broader conflict with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah .

In a statement, the Israeli military said that its aircraft "struck thousands of launcher barrels that were ready for immediate use to fire toward Israeli territory." In addition to targeting the rocket launchers, the airstrikes hit "approximately 180" other unspecified targets.

Tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border have sharply escalated after a series of explosions involving communication devices across Lebanon earlier this week killed 37 people and injured 2,931. On Friday, an Israeli airstrike in the Jamous area of southern Beirut suburbs further intensified the situation, killing at least 31 and injuring 66.

This marks the latest escalation in the ongoing conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border, which began on October 8, 2023, when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in support of Hamas in Gaza. Israel retaliated with artillery fire and airstrikes into southeastern Lebanon. The conflict has resulted in heavy casualties and the displacement of tens of thousands on both sides.
