New Jersey teacher accused of having a baby with a 13-year-old pleads not guilty; could face up to 40 years in prison

A New Jersey teacher who allegedly sexually assaulted a young student and gave birth to his child appeared at Cape May County Superior Court on Wednesday.

Laura Caron , 34, entered a not guilty plea via her attorney, John Tumelty, who also waived the reading of the indictment, reported the New York Post.

Caron was a fifth-grade middle school teacher and is accused of sexually abusing her student over four years from 2016 to 2020. The alleged victim was just 11 years old then.

Caron was indicted by a grand jury in June on charges including first-degree aggravated sexual assault , second-degree sexual assault, and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

If convicted on all three charges, Caron could face a prison sentence of up to 40 years.

Caron allegedly gave birth to a daughter in 2019, at which time she was 27 and the alleged victim was 13 years old, as per the People.

The alleged victim’s sister later informed investigators that her brother apparently claimed to be the child’s father, as per a probable cause statement.

The statement also suggests that the alleged victim, along with his brother and sister, would sometimes stay over at Caron’s house with their parents’ permission. He started living with Caron in 2016 for reasons that are still unknown, as per the statement.
