At least 100,000 personnel deployed across the Indonesia 's capital Jakarta on Friday, as the country prepares for the inauguration of President-elect Prabowo Subianto this weekend.

In this week's Sunday, Former General Prabowo will be sworn in as Indonesia's president and vice president-elect, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of outgoing president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, will be also taking office.

Who is Prabowo Subianto ?

Prabowo Subianto, a 73-year-old wealthy ex-general with connections to Indonesia's beloved outgoing president and the nation's authoritarian history, will be sworn in as the country's new leader, AP news reported.

Born in 1951 to one of Indonesia's most influential families, Subianto spent most of his childhood abroad and is fluent in French, German, English, and Dutch. He enrolled in Indonesia's Military Academy in 1970 and served in the military for nearly three decades, including as a commander in the Indonesian National Army Special Force (Kopassus) in what is now East Timor.

Human rights groups have accused Subianto of involvement in human rights violations in East Timor during the 1980s and 1990s, allegations which he has denied. Subianto and other Kopassus members were banned from traveling to the U.S. over these alleged abuses until 2020, when the ban was effectively lifted.

In 1998, Subianto was dishonorably discharged from the military after Kopassus soldiers kidnapped and tortured political opponents of Suharto. Although several of his men were tried and convicted, Subianto never faced trial and went into self-imposed exile in Jordan.

Despite his controversial past, a number of former democracy activists have joined Subianto's campaign, including Agus Jabo and Budiman Sudjatmiko, who were listed as survivors of the 1998 abductions. During a campaign event in January, Subianto apologized publicly to the two former activists, stating that he was following orders from his superiors.

Subianto returned from Jordan in 2008 and helped found the Gerinda Party. He ran for the presidency twice, losing to Widodo both times, but accepted Widodo's offer of the defense minister position in 2019 in a bid for unity.

Subianto declared as winner of presidential election

Subianto was announced the winner of the presidential election in the world’s third-largest democracy in March over two former governors who vow to contest the result in court over alleged irregularities.

Subianto won 58.6% of the votes. Former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan received 24.9% and former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo got 16.5%, the General Election Commission said. It posted polling stations’ tabulation forms on its website, allowing for independent verification, as per Reuters.

“We call on all Indonesian people to look to the future together,” he told a news conference. “We must unite and join hands because our challenges as a nation are very big.”
